Those who have closely followed Cake Wallet over the past few years may remember that we launched a beta version of the app with Lightning support way back in 2024, and then… never released it to all of our users. In this post we’ll break down what went wrong, why we went back to the drawing board, and how Spark has solved Lightning in a way that fits real people’s needs without compromising on the non-negotiables.

📖
For the Breez side of this journey, check out Breez's fantastic article:

Lightning is dead, long live Lightning!

Lightning is dead… Long live Lightning?

Giving our users Lightning network support has been a goal for many years now, with it being the last missing piece for the thousands of Bitcoiners swarming to use Cake. Silent Payments support, Payjoin v2 support, and other cutting edge privacy tech paired with our ecosystem of tools has made Cake Wallet the wallet of choice for many Bitcoiners, but Lightning has always been a glaring gap for us. When we set out to solve this problem in 2024, most wallets that were launching with Lightning support were compromising on self-custody to provide a better user experience, forcing their users (often unknowingly) to trust a custodian like Liquid with their Bitcoin to “use Lightning”.

That approach was always a non-starter for us, as self-custody is an absolute non-negotiable here at Cake. In 2024, the best alternative at the time was something by Blockstream called “Greenlight”, a solution that deployed a Lightning node in the cloud for each user, but kept their signing keys (and thus custody of their funds) local on their device. While this sounds great in theory and was supposed to solve the main hurdles with Lightning at the time (specifically the always-online requirement just to receive payments and stay in sync with the Bitcoin blockchain), in practice it fell flat. After building on the Breez SDK with Greenlight at the time, we realized quickly after launching the public beta that Greenlight itself (through no fault of Breez, I may add!) was not a workable solution for us and had far too many pain points in daily use for our real users.

It was time to go back to the drawing board.

You get an L2, you get an L2, everyone gets an L2!

2024 was a big year for new tech in the Bitcoin space, with the launch of two companies aiming to build better layer two (L2) networks on Bitcoin that would allow users to easily transfer funds, make and receive Lightning payments, and much more without sacrificing self-custody. Ark Labs launched their implementation of the Arkade OS network and Lightspark launched the Spark network, both with similar initial aims but taking very different technical approaches to the problems Bitcoin and Lightning were facing.

Lightning continues to evolve, but most of the changes we’ve witnessed over the last decade are changes in the technology. What’s happened over the last two years, however, is a change of the technology.
- Roy Sheinfeld, CEO of Breez

After hundreds of hours of research, many articles and posts written by our team, and many conversations with experts in the Lightning space like Roy, it became clear that the Spark network in particular fit our needs perfectly by offering four key things:

  1. Simple self-custody with easy to understand tradeoffs
  2. Near-instant payments in Spark and across the Lightning network
  3. Improved privacy assumptions over on-chain Bitcoin payments
  4. Native token support, specifically stablecoins (more on this in the future 👀)

When we learned that Breez would be building a cutting-edge Spark SDK to enable Lightning payments, stablecoins, and more, the path was clear.

The tl;dr on Spark

Our Lightning Journey

If you’ve missed out on the Spark chatter over the past year or so, while it’s technically complex under the hood, it’s extremely simple in operation. For users, making and receiving payments feels as straightforward as on-chain payments. Just scan a QR, enter an address, or type in someones @cake.cash username. Payments happen instantly, with no need to wait for lengthy block times or deal with channel management. Payments just… work, no matter if they’re native on Spark or done over the Lightning network to any Lightning wallet.

Under the hood, Spark works by leveraging established tech (called a “statechain” and in existence in Bitcoin since 2019) to allow users to essentially transfer ownership of Bitcoin off-chain without requiring on-chain transactions every time. Users are free to transfer coins as many times as they want, with pre-signed Bitcoin transactions being used to ensure that only the current owner of those coins can exit back to Bitcoin’s layer one at any time. To transfer this ownership, the sender works with the Spark Operators to change the ownership of the coin(s) to the new owner, with the sender and Spark Operators promising to throw away their old keys after signing.

When you want to make a Lightning payment, you simply sign over ownership of the right amount of Bitcoin in Spark to a Lightning service provider in an atomic swap, ensuring that either the Lightning transaction goes through or you keep the Bitcoin on Spark automatically — with no way for the Lightning service provider to confiscate or freeze coins in the transaction.

All of this happens in milliseconds, with Spark transfers and Lightning payments both happening near-instantly. No need to manage channels, no need to worry about outbound and inbound liquidity, just make the payments you want to make without the constant mental burden Lightning has historically brought for real people.

So what’s the catch? As long as any one of the Spark operators (there are several unique operators) or the previous sender delete their old key share for the coin(s), the new owner is the only one with access to them and there is no catch. However, as there is no way to prove deletion of data, it is possible that this occurs if all Spark Operators and the previous sender collude to try and double spend the funds.

However, the recipient can simply publish a pre-signed Bitcoin transaction on-chain to defeat this attack, claiming the funds for themselves in a trustless unilateral exit. As long as this pre-signed transaction is published in time, the operators and previous sender won’t be able to spend the funds, and they’ll have destroyed their reputation in the attempt. That double incentive for the operators and previous sender to act honestly all but eliminates that trust assumption in the real world. While we still call this type of system self-custodial, it’s important to understand that it is trust-minimized (as are most things in the space, even “pure” Lightning!) and not entirely trustless.

If you want to dive deeper into both Spark and Ark, check out Seth For Privacy’s long-form post for Bitcoin Magazine breaking down Spark and Ark from last year:

A comparison of the trust models and trade offs of Ark and Spark, the two newest entrants to Bitcoin’s collection of Layer Two protocols.

Conclusion

We’re thrilled that the right solution to the problems we were facing with Lightning has become a reality through Spark, and that the implementation itself has been greatly simplified by the incredible work of the Breez team. All of our 1M+ users now get seamless access to the Lightning network at the tap of a button without the headaches that traditionally come with Lightning usage and without sacrificing custody over their coins.

Let’s make Lightning great again.

<![CDATA[Lightning is (finally) here]]>https://blog.cakewallet.com/lightning-is-finally-here/69a570b420e2370001adf0e1Mon, 02 Mar 2026 17:14:00 GMT

Lightning has always promised fast, low-cost Bitcoin payments, but for most people that promise came with a catch. Using Lightning meant navigating channels, liquidity, and uptime, or quietly handing custody to someone else in exchange for a smoother experience. For years, that tradeoff kept Lightning out of Cake Wallet, as we weren’t willing to add it unless we could do so in a way that preserved user control and privacy, but was also intuitive and easy to use.

With Spark — a next-generation Bitcoin layer two network that pairs seamlessly with Lightning — and the Breez SDK, that finally changed. Together, they make it possible to offer Lightning that feels instant and intuitive without turning bitcoin into an IOU or pushing complexity onto the user. Payments work without channel management, users don’t need to stay online all the time or rely on centralized push notifications, and funds remain fully non-custodial with an on-chain exit always available. Lightning becomes something you can simply use, rather than something you have to manage.

Lightning is (finally) here

With today’s launch of Lightning, we’ll walk through the features that make Cake Wallet’s Lightning integration stand out from the pack. From privacy-first defaults to a broad ecosystem of Lightning-centric tools, each piece was built to make Lightning practical for everyday payments without compromising the principles that matter.

How Does Cake’s Lightning Integration Stand Apart?

(Self-custodial) Lightning, made easy

While many Lightning wallets have come and gone, users have ultimately had two core choices over the years — do you want to keep self-custody over your Bitcoin but have to constantly babysit channels, plan ahead for liquidity requirements, and be sure you keep your phone or server always-online, or do you want to offload that responsibility to someone else and give up custody entirely? With Cake Wallet’s integration of Lightning, you truly can have your cake and eat it too. Getting started with Lightning is as easy as hitting receive and having a friend send you a few sats, without any need to wait for an on-chain transaction to open a channel or worrying about if you properly balanced your inbound and outbound liquidity. Payments are still near-instant, but without you having to think about what’s happening behind the scenes every time you want to simply use Bitcoin.

No more need to give up self custody to get an incredible user experience — the future of Lightning is finally here.

💡
For those who want to deep-dive into how Spark actually works under the hood, follow us here to be the first to get our technical post breaking down Spark in easy to understand ways later this week.

Privacy-First Defaults

Privacy is not an optional setting in Cake Wallet’s Lightning implementation. Unlike other Lightning wallets using Spark, Cake Wallet makes it easy to receive over Lightning without revealing your Spark address, a Spark-native address only used for transfers within the Spark network. Additionally, Cake prevents your Spark transactions from being published to Spark block explorers, meaning that your barista has no way to see your balance when you buy your latte each morning. Cake’s strong privacy defaults make it a more private user experience than many other Spark-based Lightning wallet implementations available today. The privacy model is closer to a VPN than a public ledger: activity is offloaded from Bitcoin’s permanent transparency without pretending to be a full privacy layer. Users don’t need to configure anything or “remember” to protect themselves. Cake makes privacy easy with Lightning.

We’ll continue pushing the limits of what’s possible when it comes to privacy in Spark, with plans for hidden amounts for Spark transfers and more on the roadmap.

Custom Lightning Addresses

Lightning is (finally) here

Lightning addresses are a human-readable way to receive Lightning payments, designed to work more like an email address than a long string of numbers and characters. Instead of sharing invoices or complicated payment details every time, users can simply give someone a recognizable address, and payments can be routed automatically. This makes Lightning feel far more natural and practical for everyday use, whether for business, tips, or peer-to-peer payments. Under the hood, Lightning addresses translate into payment requests behind the scenes, but from the user’s perspective, the experience is simple, consistent, and easy to remember.

In Cake Wallet, Lightning addresses are available from the very beginning. Users can create a custom Lightning address right away, without needing to meet minimum balances, usage thresholds, or other hidden requirements that many platforms impose. Cake makes it possible to offer a smooth onboarding experience where people can start receiving payments immediately, without giving up custody or waiting to “unlock” basic features. The result is Lightning that feels accessible from day one.

All your Bitcoin wallets in one app

Lightning is (finally) here

For most Bitcoiners, there has always been a need for multiple apps to be able to manage your Bitcoin across your long-term “cold” storage, your short-term “hot” wallet, and your daily Lightning wallet. This used to require three separate apps to get the most out of your setup, requiring keeping up with updates, readjusting to different UX flows each time you switched apps, etc. With Cake Wallet, we’re bringing Lightning into the fold to pair with our best-in-class on-chain wallet, where you can easily manage your funds, use advanced privacy tools like Silent Payments and Payjoin, and much more.

But it doesn’t stop there! Cake’s support for almost every hardware wallet out there ensures that you can easily pair your favorite hardware wallet with Cake Wallet, making those Lightning top-ups from cold storage easier than ever — no need to even copy and paste addresses, just pick the right wallet from your contacts when you go to send and you’re off to the races.

One app to rule them all across the entire spectrum of self-custody.

Instant Lightning <> crypto swaps

Lightning is (finally) here

While many in the Bitcoin space talk about the concept of being “Bitcoin-only”, the reality is that the majority of Bitcoiners are using Bitcoin as a vital tool for freedom alongside other, less cypherpunk cryptocurrencies. The combination of Bitcoin and stablecoins, specifically, is providing a powerful dual-lifeline for much of the Global South, allowing them to save hard-earned wages in Bitcoin and spend Tether (USDT) at merchants or send it back home to family members as an immensely useful form of remittances. Cake Wallet has always provided a fantastic fit for these users, but Lightning makes this better than ever before. Making a swap from Lightning to USDT takes mere seconds now thanks to the Lightning Network’s speed, letting you go from Bitcoin balance to USDT in your Ethereum or Tron wallet in less than a minute.

Lower fees, faster swaps, and faster payments only continues to increase Bitcoin’s impact to those who desperately need a decentralized and censorship-resistant way to move value, and will continue to shift more and more users to using it as a method of exchange.

Spend Bitcoin with your favorite real-world brands

While users have been loving Lightning support on Cake Pay, our privacy-first debit card and gift card service, it’s required a bit of juggling to use in a browser alongside another Lightning wallet. Today, that ends. Every Cake Wallet user has Cake Pay access just a tap away in the new Apps button on the bottom bar, with native Lightning payments that make using your Bitcoin in real life faster than ever before. Pick a pre-paid debit card that you can use anywhere online, or jump into a gift card for one of thousands of brands to make your Bitcoin useful to you today.

Soon, we’ll also support complete in-app delivery, allowing you to pay instantly with Lightning and get your gift card codes in milliseconds, directly in your Cake Wallet app, making it perfect for paying exact amounts while you’re waiting in the checkout line. Keep an eye out for that update in the coming months!

Conclusion

While we know it took longer than many expected, we’re finally happy with the technology and UI possible with Lightning. Spark and Breez have made the technology accessible, and our incredible design team have worked tirelessly to make Cake Wallet easier than ever to use. Dive into Cake Wallet today to see why over a million users have taken the plunge since 2018.

Cake Wallet v5.9.0 is about refinement, reliability, and removing friction where it matters most. Our latest release doesn’t chase novelty for its own sake, it strengthens the core experience across privacy coins and EVM chains, making the wallet more intuitive to use, easier to recover, and more predictable day to day. The goal is simple: fewer surprises, more confidence, and better defaults.

Zcash Optimizations

Say Hello to the Latest Version of Cake, BNB Smart Chain Support, Zcash Improvements, and EVM Balance Fetching

One of the most meaningful additions in v5.9.0 is Zashi restoration. Restoring a Zcash wallet should be dependable and stress-free, especially when privacy is involved. You can now restore Zcash wallets created in Zashi smoothly inside Cake Wallet, preserving continuity and reducing recovery anxiety when moving between tools.

This release also brings broad Zcash improvements, including proper key view and restoration support, ensuring users can accurately recover and restore their Zcash wallets when needed. Alongside that, Cake Wallet will add full Zcash memo handling, in our upcoming v6.0.0 version of Cake. These are foundational capabilities, and they reinforce our commitment to implementing Zcash the right way.

BNB Smartchain Support Arrives in Cake

On the multi-chain side, BNB Smart Chain support has landed in Cake Wallet. This is a meaningful step forward because BNB Smart Chain has become one of the most widely used networks globally, particularly across the Global South, where stablecoin usage, especially Tether, plays a critical role in everyday payments, savings, and remittances. For many users in these regions, BNB Smart Chain isn’t a niche ecosystem; it’s one of the primary onramps into digital dollars and borderless finance. By adding native support, Cake Wallet meets users where they already are, rather than expecting them to change their habits or learn new tools.

Many people today rely on centralized or semi-custodial apps to access stablecoins on BNB Smart Chain, which introduces counterparty risk and the possibility of freezes or restrictions. With Cake Wallet, users gain full self-custody over these assets while still enjoying a familiar, intuitive interface. Just as importantly, they can easily move between chains and asset types, giving them the freedom to shift into more censorship-resistant systems like Bitcoin or privacy-preserving networks like Monero when needed.

It allows users who depend on stablecoins for daily life to access those tools in a self-custodial environment, while also opening a path toward true financial sovereignty. By bringing these worlds together in one wallet, Cake Wallet lowers barriers, increases resilience, and helps users stay in control regardless of how the global financial landscape evolves.

Block-Based Syncing Status Makes a Comeback

We’ve also improved transparency during syncing by bringing back clear block-based sync status. Instead of progress indicators, users can once again see how many blocks remain. It’s a small change, but one that restores predictability and reduces uncertainty, especially important when syncing privacy-focused chains.

EVM Balance Fetching Automation For ETH, BSC, ARB, BASE & POL

Say Hello to the Latest Version of Cake, BNB Smart Chain Support, Zcash Improvements, and EVM Balance Fetching

Another quality-of-life improvement in v5.9.0 is automatic token discovery on EVM chains. Cake Wallet will now automatically fetch and display all tokens with a balance, removing the need for manual token adds or guesswork. Your assets show up when they exist, no scavenger hunt required.

In Conclusion

Taken together, Cake Wallet v5.9.0 is about trust through polish. Better wallet restoration paths, stronger Zcash support, BNB smartchain support, clearer feedback, and smarter asset handling all add up to a wallet that feels more solid and dependable. As always, we’ll keep building deliberately, improving the fundamentals, and putting users first, one release at a time.

In our latest update v5.8.0, we’re adding support for Arbitrum, Jupiter DEX, Birdpay for Zcash, and Zcash.Me Aliases! Update now, and enjoy all our newest features.

Arbitrum Support is Now Integrated in Cake

Cake adds Support for Arbitrum, Jupiter DEX, Blink API, Plus Birdpay & Aliases for Zcash!

Cake Wallet’s addition of Arbitrum support brings faster, lower-fee Ethereum transactions directly into the app, without changing how users already manage their crypto. Arbitrum acts as an express lane for Ethereum, helping reduce congestion and costs while remaining secured by Ethereum itself. From the user’s perspective, it’s simple: you get quicker transactions and cheaper fees, all inside the same familiar Cake Wallet interface.

This integration fits naturally with Cake Wallet’s multi-coin, blockchain-agnostic approach. Rather than locking users into a single network, Cake gives you practical options based on how you actually use crypto. With Arbitrum now supported, users can access Ethereum-based assets and applications more efficiently, while Cake continues to handle the complexity behind the scenes. It’s another step in making powerful crypto tools easier to use, without compromising on self-custody, flexibility, or long-term independence.

Jupiter DEX Comes To Cake Wallet

Cake adds Support for Arbitrum, Jupiter DEX, Blink API, Plus Birdpay & Aliases for Zcash!

Cake Wallet’s integration of Jupiter DEX makes swapping Solana-based tokens simpler, faster, and easier to trust, without leaving the app. Jupiter acts as a smart routing layer, automatically finding the best available price across multiple decentralized exchanges. For users, that means fewer decisions and better outcomes: you choose what you want to swap, and Cake Wallet takes care of the rest.

This addition reflects Cake Wallet’s focus on usability without sacrificing self-custody. Swaps via Jupiter are non-custodial and happen directly on Solana, so users keep control of their funds at all times. By bringing Jupiter into Cake Wallet, we’re removing friction from everyday crypto actions and making decentralized trading feel natural, reliable, and accessible, exactly how it should be.

Birdpay for Zcash & Zcash.me Aliases are Now Live In Cake!

Cake adds Support for Arbitrum, Jupiter DEX, Blink API, Plus Birdpay & Aliases for Zcash!

Cake Wallet’s BirdPay support for Zcash is now live, making it easier than ever to send ZEC to people on social media. With BirdPay, you can send Zcash to an X username or handle, and Cake Wallet takes care of resolving and completing the payment securely in the background. It’s a small change that makes a big difference, reducing friction while keeping the experience approachable for both new and experienced users.

Just as importantly, BirdPay for Zcash is implemented with privacy in mind. Payments still originate from shielded addresses by default, so users don’t have to trade convenience for privacy. You get the ease of human-readable payments without exposing unnecessary transaction details or introducing manual steps that could lead to mistakes.

Similar to Birdpay, Cake Wallet’s support for Zcash.me aliases makes sending Zcash simpler and more human, without giving up privacy. Instead of copying and pasting long, error-prone addresses, users can send ZEC to a readable alias, making payments faster and easier to get right. It’s a small usability improvement that removes friction, especially for everyday transactions and sharing payment details.

Cake Wallet’s launch of Zcash brings private digital cash into a mature, multi-coin, privacy-first wallet built for real-world use. Since 2018, Cake Wallet has focused on making financial privacy usable and reliable on mobile, earning trust through open-source development, strong UX, and long-term consistency. Our Zcash integration reflects that philosophy: fully shielded by default, multi-coin and blockchain-agnostic, and implemented without compromise.

Users get the complete modern Zcash experience, auto-shielding, rotating t-addresses, swaps, on-ramps, and real-world spending via CakePay, without complexity or privacy trade-offs. With more features on the roadmap, this launch positions Cake Wallet as a stable, long-term home for Zcash, built calmly and intentionally around user choice and control.

Zcash Done The Right Way

Cake Wallet’s launch of Zcash support is about giving people more choice, not locking them into a single chain, wallet, or way of doing things. Since 2018, Cake Wallet has focused on one simple idea, that financial privacy should be usable, reliable, and accessible on mobile. With over a million downloads and a fully open-source codebase, Cake Wallet has earned trust by having the best user experience, and by leading the industry with the most innovative privacy-first features, cycle after cycle. Adding Zcash is a natural extension of that mission.

Most people use and appreciate more than one kind of coin, and Cake Wallet has always been built with that in mind. Our multi-coin approach reflects how users actually manage money, leveraging different tools for different needs. Just as importantly, Cake Wallet is privacy-first and chain agnostic. Supporting Zcash means empowering Cake wallet users with the best tools for their distinctive use cases. That independence lets us support Zcash for the right reasons, and the reason is because private digital cash matters.

From day one, our goal with Zcash was completeness, not compromise. Cake Wallet has implemented Zcash the right way, which means every spend originates from a shielded address by default, protecting user privacy at all times and ensuring people can remain private, even when sending funds to transparent addresses, without having to even think about it.

Cake Wallet covers the full modern Zcash feature set users expect from a feature-complete Zcash wallet, including auto-shielding by default, rotating t-addresses, NEAR Intents DEX functionality, fiat on-ramps, swaps to other cryptocurrencies, passphrase support, and AnyPay support. Privacy isn’t treated as an advanced setting or an optional extra. It’s built into the experience by default, in a way that feels natural, practical, and easy to use.

Of course, private money only works if you can actually spend it. That’s why Zcash also works seamlessly with Cake Pay, allowing users to turn ZEC into gift cards and debit cards for everyday goods and services. It’s a simple bridge between private digital payments and the real world, no complexity, no unnecessary friction, just utility.

Looking ahead, this launch is only the beginning. Hardware wallet support, Cupcake support, and deeper integrations are on the roadmap as we continue refining the Zcash experience. Our approach remains the same – build calmly, stay flexible, and put users first. Our Zcash integration is about offering a stable, long-term home for private digital cash inside a great wallet, which puts users first.

Digital cash is meant to be simple to use, secure, and private by default, and yet Zcash wallets have been plagued with bad UX, privacy gotchas, and incomplete features from day one. With Zcash in Cake Wallet, all of that changes; from auto-shielding without a tap, automatically rotating transparent and shielded addresses, and a broad suite of features, we’re doing our part to make Zcash all it has promised since 2016.

Users get the full modern Zcash experience, shielded-by-default transactions, in-app swaps, AnyPay support, and real-world spending through Cake Pay, all wrapped in a polished interface that has been refined since 2018 through open-source development and real-world use. That combination of deep Zcash integration, thoughtful privacy defaults, and proven longevity is what makes Cake Wallet the most advanced Zcash wallet available today.

Join us as we take a look at each of these features, revealing how you can go from crypto noob to a privacy-demanding Zcash power-user.

Autoshielding (Private by Default)

With Zcash on Cake Wallet, autoshielding is enabled by default, ensuring funds are immediately moved into shielded addresses without requiring manual steps. This removes friction and guesswork for users while reinforcing a simple principle: privacy should not depend on advanced settings or perfect behavior. By making shielded usage the standard path, Cake Wallet helps users stay protected automatically as they receive and manage ZEC.

Always Private, No Questions Asked

Cake Wallet does not allow outgoing transactions from transparent (T-) addresses. Every spend originates from a shielded address, ensuring transaction privacy is preserved even when sending funds to transparent recipients. This design choice prevents accidental privacy leaks and reflects a deliberate commitment to implementing Zcash the way it should always be used, securely and privately by default.

One Seed to Rule Them All

Cake Wallet’s single recovery seed can manage multiple wallets and multiple coins, including Zcash. This “one seed” approach reflects how people actually use crypto today, holding and using different assets for different purposes. By combining multi-coin support with a unified seed, Cake Wallet reduces complexity while maintaining strong self-custody, making it easier for users to manage private digital cash without juggling multiple backups. You can truly “be your own bank”.

Background sync

Ever gotten tired of waiting for your Zcash wallet to sync so you can make that payment? On Android, we let you enable background sync with a tap, ensuring that all of your wallets are always up to date and ready to go when you need them.

Yes, it's really that simple.

AnyPay Integration

With AnyPay, also known as Pay Anything, Cake Wallet removes one of the most common friction points in crypto payments, when a buyer and seller have mismatched currencies. If you have Zcash but need to pay an address in another supported asset, like Bitcoin, or Monero, you simply paste the address and hit send. Cake Wallet automatically handles the swap in the background and completes the payment in a single, seamless flow. No wallet switching, no manual swapping, and no awkward back-and-forth about which coin someone accepts. It’s crypto working the way people intuitively expect it to, simple, direct, and private by default, even when paying across different currencies.

Shielded Swaps

We’ve brought our incredible swaps to Zcash, including shielded swaps using NEAR, allowing users to move between assets in just a few taps while preserving privacy. This expands Zcash’s utility beyond simple transfers and into real financial workflows. Additional swap providers with full shielded support, including Exolix, are coming soon, further improving liquidity, choice, and flexibility for users without compromising on privacy.

Passphrase wallets

Worried that someone will discover your seed phrase at home and swipe all your hard-earned Zcash? We've added passphrase support for Zcash, meaning you can finally add an extra layer of security to your wallets.

When creating or a restoring a wallet, just check the box and enter your passphrase and you're off to the races.

⚠️
Remember that if you set a passphrase and forget it, you won't be able to recover your funds! Please be cautious when using this feature and ensure that you backup both the seed phrase and the passphrase properly.

Cake Pay

Private money only works if it can be spent. Through Cake Pay, users can turn ZEC into gift cards and debit cards for everyday goods and services directly from Cake Wallet. This bridges private digital payments with real-world utility, making Zcash more than just a store of value, it becomes usable money without routing users back through traditional, surveillance-heavy payment systems.

Rotating Transparent Addresses

For situations where transparent addresses are required, such as certain swap flows, Cake Wallet uses rotating t-addresses. This minimizes address reuse and reduces the risk of transaction graph linking, which is especially important during swaps. Combined with shielded-by-default spending, this approach ensures that even edge cases are handled with privacy in mind. Famed blockchain investigator ZachXBT recently shed some light on the kinds of risks users are exposed to when making swaps with Zcash and re-used t-addresses. Cake protects users from these kinds of privacy lapses.

Important - As Zashi has implemented a different approach to change addresses than Cake Wallet and other more established Zcash wallets, restoring a Zashi seed phrase in Cake Wallet will not show all funds available. If you're migrating to Cake Wallet from Zashi, create a new Zcash wallet in Cake, and send your ZEC funds over to your new Zcash wallet in Cake from Zashi.

Conclusion

Together, these design choices reflect a single philosophy – that Zcash should be private, usable, and hard to misuse. Cake Wallet’s integration doesn’t just support Zcash, it implements it carefully, intentionally, and with long-term user protection at the center. For those die-hard Monero users who are looking for a Monero-only experience, we also have Monero.com.

What truly sets Cake Wallet apart is its maturity and independence. As a multi-coin, blockchain-agnostic wallet with a single seed managing multiple assets, Cake Wallet fits naturally into how people actually use crypto, without locking them into one network or ecosystem. It isn’t an experimental side project or a single-chain app, it’s a long-standing privacy wallet with over a million downloads, industry-leading privacy by design, continuous innovation, and a clear long-term roadmap.

Cake Wallet Launches A New Chain, New Swaps, and More!

What it is: Zcash (ZEC) is a cryptocurrency that aims to offer strong privacy protection. While Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions are largely public by default (anyone can see how much you sent and where), Zcash gives you the option to make transactions private using something called "shielded addresses." At Cake Wallet, we've made shielding mandatory for Zcash—a feature we believe should be the standard for all users. This means you can only send and receive Zcash through shielded addresses, ensuring your privacy is protected by default.

While you can still send funds to transparent (non-shielded) addresses when needed, your transactions will always originate from a shielded source, keeping your financial activity private. By using Zcash in Cake Wallet, you're joining a community of users who prioritize the highest standards of financial privacy.

Why it matters: Imagine if every time you bought coffee with your debit card, everyone in the coffee shop could see your bank balance and every purchase you've ever made. That's basically how most crypto works. Zcash, Monero, and other privacy coins try to flip this on its head.

What this means for Cake Wallet users: With Zcash support coming to v5.7, you'll be able to store, send, and receive ZEC right in Cake Wallet—with the same interface you're already used to. All shielded by default for optimal privacy. When it comes to privacy-oriented tools, we now support:

  • Monero
  • Zano
  • Decred
  • Bitcoin Silent Payments & Payjoin V2
  • Litecoin MWEB
  • And now Zcash

And it goes without saying, XMR isn't going anywhere—it's a cornerstone of what Cake Wallet stands for and a core part of our identities. But here's the thing: more privacy options in the ecosystem means more people thinking about privacy, period. Whether someone starts with Zcash and later discovers Monero, or uses both for different purposes, it all strengthens the broader movement toward financial privacy where users have the freedom to use any currency. (and hey, we still have a dedicated app, monero.com for any of you who are Monero-only!)

Bringing Zcash to Cake Wallet is a major milestone for us, and we’re excited to see it in your hands at last. Welcome to a more private way to transact.

Cake Wallet Launches A New Chain, New Swaps, and More!

Near Intents Comes To Cake Wallet!

Cake Wallet’s support for NEAR Intents makes cross-chain swaps simpler, more decentralized, and easier to trust. Instead of relying on a single route or intermediary, NEAR Intents let multiple independent market makers compete to fulfill each swap, with the best option selected automatically. From the user’s perspective, it feels straightforward, you choose what you want to swap, and Cake Wallet handles the rest, while behind the scenes the process is designed to minimize trust, fees, and reduce unnecessary intermediaries. From your side, it’s a single swap flow, while the protocol handles decentralized execution in the background.

Built on the NEAR Protocol, NEAR Intents help ensure cross-chain swaps are executed efficiently and transparently, without users needing to understand bridges, liquidity sources, or complex routing. And it’s not just better swaps, it even adds support for swapping shielded Zcash, meaning you get the best privacy Zcash has to offer any time you swap. The result is a smoother swapping experience that stays true to Cake Wallet’s focus on user privacy, self-custody, and user control: fewer assumptions, fewer manual steps, less margin for error, and more confidence that your swap is being executed in the most reliable way possible.

Your crypto is your money, and the last thing you should worry about is whether your wallet is going to randomly decide to have a bad day.

That's why we completely rebuilt how Cake Wallet stores your data. We've done our final migration to SQLite, an efficient database engine. (SQ-who? It's pronounced 'sequel light'—think of it as upgrading an old filing cabinet to a far more organized one.) All open source of course. This means:

  • More stable wallets that don't misbehave
  • Better backups so your data is always safe
  • Faster wallet switching and loading because nobody likes loading screens
  • Rock-solid reliability you can continue to trust

While this sounds like a 'behind the curtain' update, it impacts almost every tap of your Cake Wallet experience, and we hope you feel the difference.

We Optimized Everything: Faster Performance, Better UX, Maximum Security

Litecoin Gets MWEB Support in Cupcake

If you're a fan of Litecoin and privacy, you'll love this one. We've added Litecoin MWEB support to Cupcake, our companion security app. If you're new to Cupcake, you can learn more in our dedicated blog:

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security
Remember when getting serious about crypto meant waiting weeks for a hardware wallet to ship, handing over your personal information, and dropping $100+ on a device? Yeah, we remember too. And honestly? We got tired of it.

MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) is Litecoin's privacy feature that keeps your transactions more confidential. Combine that with Cupcake's air-gapped, offline signing, and you get both privacy and security in one place. We're the first team in the world to ship public, fully functioning offline signing for a Litecoin MWEB wallet—and we were the first to launch an MWEB-compatible mobile wallet too.

We interviewed one of the main developers behind MWEB on our YouTube channel if you want to learn more about MWEB. Pardon our old logo.

Even More Improvements

We Optimized Everything: Faster Performance, Better UX, Maximum Security

There are many more quality of life improvements:

  • AnyPay Improvements: We've improved our integration with AnyPay, making it even easier to spend your crypto in the real world. Spending crypto should be as easy to spending cash.
  • Better Automatic Node Switching: Nodes connect your wallet to the blockchain. We released automatic node switching recently, and now we've made improvements to the feature so it functions even smoother.
  • Improved EVM Experience: We've optimized everything under the hood so your EVM wallets load faster and run smoother with a refactored code base. We also improved fee estimation.
  • New Navigation Bar: We've redesigned our navigation to be more intuitive and user-friendly. It's a small change that makes a big difference in how you interact with us every day.
  • Duress PIN: This has been requested for years. Imagine a worst-case scenario where someone is forcing you to unlock your wallet. A duress PIN is a secondary PIN that looks like it unlocks your wallet normally, but actually wipes Cake Wallet entirely. It's a safety feature that could make a real difference in an emergency situation. Enable it in Security and backup
  • Dark & Tintable Icons For iOS: Now Cake Wallet will blend in with your other apps.
  • AliasPay Improvements: We've expanded AliasPay to make it even easier to broadcast your Monero address to the world using a .xmr domain. This frees up space in your bio & pinned tweet and makes it easier for people to send you money! Get your .XMR domain today
We Optimized Everything: Faster Performance, Better UX, Maximum Security
Set up your .XMR domain on X/Twitter and then anyone can send you money from Cake Wallet by just entering your X username.

Reliability, security and privacy are always our top priority, and features like these show we're thinking about your user experience in every possible scenario.

<![CDATA[How Cupcake Actually Works: A Technical Deep(ish) Dive]]>https://blog.cakewallet.com/how-cupcake-actually-works-a-technical-deep-ish-dive/68bbb4829520780001b0e853Mon, 20 Oct 2025 12:00:58 GMT

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Cake Wallet lately, you’ve most certainly heard of our latest app, Cupcake. But were you left wondering exactly how it works, how it ensures your funds are secure, and how it compares to a traditional hardware wallet? We’ll break all of that down in this (slightly) deeper dive, as while we build in the open (FOSS FTW!) it can be hard to get a grasp of how things work technically for those who aren’t deep in the code.

What is Cupcake?

In case you missed it, Cupcake is the latest app in the Cake Wallet family, focused on making crypto security possible for everyone. No more waiting weeks for shipping and customs, no more $200+ costs, no more terrifying data breaches. If you have an old phone lying around, Cupcake lets you turn it into a powerful hardware wallet with just a few taps. But how does all of this actually work under the hood? Is it actually secure?

Why do we need hardware wallets, anyways?

Private key security is the most critical aspect of security in crypto, and the core reason people like you want to use a hardware wallet to secure their funds. While mobile phones and hot wallets have come a long way over the years, some users prefer not to use an app that’s always-online for storing their wealth. Are hot wallets fine for spending money and NFTs? Sure, but we can do better when it comes to securing generational wealth.

Enter hardware wallets — specialized hardware devices built exclusively to store your private keys and sign transactions. While they’re often hideous and hard to use, they allow you to keep your private keys offline and entirely distinct from your digital life, and yet you can connect them to a software wallet like Cake Wallet to easily view your balance and see transaction history even when you’re apart from your hardware wallet. They’re a fantastic tool and have set the standard for security over the last decade, but they also come with many downsides that we’ve already covered at length in our last blog post on Cupcake.

How Cupcake Actually Works: A Technical Deep(ish) Dive

While many current crypto users may already have a hardware wallet, we think we can bring 90% of the security they offer to the other 99% of the world. Cupcake lets us build a user-friendly, approachable, and 100% free and open source alternative to hardware wallets, because we think the 99% deserve better.

Cupcake’s security model

How Cupcake Actually Works: A Technical Deep(ish) Dive
  1. Security at rest

To ensure that Cupcake users get the best possible security for their private keys, Cupcake utilizes the best local security the phone being used can offer. For highly secure devices like Google Pixels and iPhones, that means storing secrets in a secure enclave to ensure that no other apps on the device can access them. Android and iOS both enforce strict app isolation to prevent malicious apps installed on a device from accessing secrets and data from other, legitimate apps, and all of that protection is employed with Cupcake as well.

We also leverage the secure enclave on those devices to enforce PIN brute-force protection, ensuring that an attacker with access to your unlocked phone can’t easily get into Cupcake and access keys or sign transactions. Breaking this PIN protection would require breaking your phone’s security model, something that is extraordinarily difficult on an up to date, modern device.

Lastly, the wallet file itself has an encryption key that is derived from both your own unique PIN or password for Cupcake as well as a part generated on your phone’s secure enclave. This means that even if your phone was confiscated and all of the storage was captured, the wallet files will still have an effective layer of protection.

For those using very old devices or ones without a secure enclave (a rarity these days), we’ve implemented a novel use of proof-of-work to prevent PIN brute-forcing as best we can. When we detect that there is no secure enclave on the device, we still enforce a multi-layered secure storage approach at-rest while forcing the phone to do intensive calculations that increase in difficulty with each failed PIN attempt. While this isn’t as strong of protections as those enforced by a top-tier secure enclave, it will still prevent the most common types of attacks — evil maid attacks and attacks of opportunity.

  1. Security in flight
How Cupcake Actually Works: A Technical Deep(ish) Dive

We’ve entirely disabled network permissions for the Cupcake app on both Android and iOS, ensuring that the operating system will never allow Cupcake itself to connect to the internet. But if your keys are so secure and Cupcake can’t go online, how do you actually sign transactions? We’ve gone with the industry standard approach to signing transactions without ever bringing your keys online, relying on animated QRs to transmit data between your Cupcake device and your device running Cake Wallet.

When you want to make a transaction, you initiate it on Cake Wallet just like any other transaction. Enter the address, amount, etc., but what normally would be a send button on Cake Wallet actually opens up a new screen with an animated QR code. This QR code contains the unsigned transaction, with all of the details needed for Cupcake to validate the transaction, display all of the details for you on your Cupcake device, and then sign when ready. Then, Cupcake shows its own animated QR code that contains only the signed transaction, with no private keys ever being shared.

Scan that QR code with Cake Wallet, hit send, and you’ve just made a transaction while keeping your private keys 100% offline the entire time. It’s pretty magical, if we’re honest.

  1. Security when updating
How Cupcake Actually Works: A Technical Deep(ish) Dive

One of the most common questions we’ve gotten about Cupcake since launching it is “how can I update Cupcake without being online?” For most users, the best approach is to allow their Cupcake device to come online for app and OS updates, as the most common risks would be that the device itself would have a vulnerability that allowed a PIN bypass or an exploit for an attacker with possession of the device. This relies on Cupcake’s lack of network permissions to ensure that keys stay offline, while still allowing for easy updates to Cupcake and the phone’s OS.

For the more paranoid among us (you know who you are), an alternative option would be to keep the device you want to use Cupcake on always offline and simply install updates by transferring the latest APK file with a flash drive or similar. Unfortunately due to Apple’s blocking of side-loading in most geographies this will usually only work on Android, but is a good approach for those with an old Android phone lying around. This approach may also be more reasonable for those devices that are already past their lifecycle of security updates and wouldn’t get OS updates anymore regardless.

In general, Cupcake also relies on OS security to ensure that even if you were tricked into installing a malicious version of Cupcake from an outside source, there is no way to install it over top of the legitimate app. We take app signing security very seriously, and that security acts as a guarantee that you can only install official app updates that are properly signed by our teams app signing keys.

Cupcake best practices

If that was way too much to read, here are a few rapid-fire best practices to ensure you get the best security when using Cupcake:

  1. Use a Google Pixel or Apple iPhone for the strongest secure enclave security
  2. Use a device that still receives security updates
    1. (Recommended) Use a hardened operating system like GrapheneOS for even more security
  3. Use a strong, securely generated device PIN or password, preferably six digits or more
    1. (Recommended) Whenever possible, use a strong password instead of a PIN for better security
  4. Use a strong, securely generated password for Cupcake
  5. Keep your device offline unless actively updating the OS or Cupcake itself
    1. (Recommended) Perform OS and Cupcake app updates offline when using an Android device

But wait, why do we support hardware wallets in Cake Wallet then?

While Cupcake solves a lot of needs for those in the Global South and those at high risk (i.e. journalists, dissidents, and activists), many crypto-native users still love the set of tradeoffs that traditional hardware wallets bring. A good hardware wallet like the Ledger Flex, Foundation Passport, or Trezor Safe 5 brings a smaller attack surface, a familiar UI, and broader multi-crypto support (for now). Not only that, as they are devices that are incapable of network connections entirely, keeping them offline has less tradeoffs and hassle. Lastly, as Cupcake’s security depends heavily on what phone you choose to run it on, reasoning with the security model of a specialized hardware wallet is much simpler overall.

When you combine the 90% of security that Cupcake brings to the 99% of people in the world along with the maximal security that existing hardware wallets bring to the 1% of crypto-native users in one powerful app (that’s Cake Wallet!) you have the best of both worlds. Your crypto, your hardware, your choice. We are proud to also embrace hardware wallets!

Conclusion

The goal of Cupcake is to bring 90% of the security of hardware wallets to the 99% of people in the world who don’t have a hardware wallet and often have no access to one. We believe we’ve made huge strides to accomplish that goal, with security being top-of-mind when designing and improving Cupcake. We’re excited to bring even more advanced functionality to Cupcake over the coming months, with things like Litecoin MWEB, Silent Payments, BIP 353 DNSSEC verification and more on the roadmap.

Have something else you’d like to see in Cupcake, or have a further question about the security model? Don’t hesitate to drop us a line or reach out to our incredible support staff!

Your Cake Wallet Just Got a Serious Upgrade: Trezor, BitBox, Base & the Look You've Been Asking For

First up: Trezor and BitBox support is now live on Android! If you're not familiar with hardware wallets, think of them like a secure USB stick for your crypto. They keep your private keys completely offline, away from hackers, malware, and other threats.

👀
Update: this also includes support for the just-launched Trezor Safe 7, letting you combine the latest and greatest in open-source hardware security with Cake Wallet's convenience and open-source privacy tech.

The challenge has traditionally been making that security convenient. To help solve this, we've built seamless integration with Trezor and BitBox devices, complete with a polished setup flow. Now you get the security of a hardware wallet with the sleek, intuitive interface and convenient features you're used to from Cake Wallet.

Here's how it works: plug in your hardware device, follow our streamlined setup process (seriously, we made it really easy), and now you're managing your assets with top-tier security AND convenience. iOS coming soon!

Base Jumping into Layer 2

Your Cake Wallet Just Got a Serious Upgrade: Trezor, BitBox, Base & the Look You've Been Asking For

Next up: we've added native support for Base!

What is Base? Think of Ethereum as a popular highway. Good infrastructure, trusted by millions, but during rush hour traffic gets backed up and tolls (gas fees) skyrocket. Layer 2 solutions like Base are like express lanes built on top of that highway, they use Ethereum's infrastructure but process transactions faster and cheaper.

These attributes mean Base is getting quite popular, leading to many requests from the community to include it in Cake Wallet. Now you get access to lower fees, faster transactions, and access to a growing ecosystem of apps and tokens. Learn more about Base on its website.

To get started, just select Base from your wallet list, and you're ready to send, receive, and store assets on this fast-growing network.

Be Your Own Brokerage: Trade Stocks with Your Crypto

Your Cake Wallet Just Got a Serious Upgrade: Trezor, BitBox, Base & the Look You've Been Asking For

This is pretty huge: you can now access xStocks directly in Cake Wallet.

What are xStocks? They're tokenized versions of real-world stocks and ETFs like Google, Amazon, Nvidia, and many other blue-chip companies. The twist? You can buy them using crypto without ever touching a traditional brokerage account. No banks. No brokers. No waiting for market hours. Just 24/7 trading, completely self-custodial.

Here's how it works: head to Settings > Add Tokens, and add whichever tokens you want. Now, you can swap USDT (or other crypto) directly into tokenized stocks. You're not buying the actual stock itself, you're holding a token that represents it. Think of it like holding a receipt that tracks the stock's value. If the company pays dividends, you'll see that reflected in your holdings automatically. That's it, no complicated onboarding. Just swap, hold, and trade whenever you want.

The trading itself is handled by xStocks (backed by reputable partners you can read about at xstocks.com). We just make it ridiculously easy to access from Cake Wallet. You can learn more from Bitcoin Magazine who did great coverage for this feature:

Tired Of Bank Hassles? Cake Wallet Just Unlocked Google And Nvidia Stocks—Without Sharing Your Data
Imagine ditching endless forms for instant trades in Google or Nvidia—Cake Wallet’s fresh xStocks drop turns your phone into a privacy shield for global finance, perfect for the 100M+ crypto users fed up with hacks and borders.

Whether you want to diversify your portfolio, take advantage of after-hours trading, or just experiment with a new way to invest, xStocks gives you another tool in your financial freedom toolkit, all without leaving your self-custodial wallet. Yes, we're democratizing wealth-building across borders. It's pretty cool.

Monero Orange is Back!

Your Cake Wallet Just Got a Serious Upgrade: Trezor, BitBox, Base & the Look You've Been Asking For

We heard you. Loud and clear. When we temporarily removed it while working on our bigger redesign plans, the feedback was...let's say passionate. We've been working hard on bringing it back, better than ever with our new theming system...just in time for Halloween.

There's a lot more coming on the design front (trust us, we've got some exciting changes in the works), but for now, enjoy customizing your Cake Wallet to match your style.

More Changes Under the Hood:

  • We've migrated to cake.mempool.space as our new blockchain explorer, which means more reliable, faster, and more consistent fee estimations.
  • We've fixed bugs, improved code quality, and generally made everything run smoother and more reliably.

Ready to Experience the Upgrade?

If you're already using Cake Wallet, update to v5.5.0 now to check out all these new features.

If you're new here: welcome! Cake Wallet is an open-source, non-custodial wallet that supports Bitcoin, Monero, Ethereum, Litecoin, and now Base, along with dozens of other cryptocurrencies. We believe in privacy, security, and making crypto accessible to everyone. Not just the tech elite.

Download Cake Wallet for iOS and Android and try it for yourself!

<![CDATA[Announcing MyMonero’s sunset and stewardship transition to Cake Wallet]]>https://blog.cakewallet.com/announcing-mymoneros-sunset-and-stewardship-transition-to-cake-wallet/68df9dde7e2d220001240badMon, 06 Oct 2025 17:40:10 GMT

We're excited to announce that MyMonero has decided to entrust Cake Wallet with stewardship of their many users and systems as they sunset their operation. MyMonero has been a long-standing partner in the Monero space, and we're proud that they've collaborated on this seamless transition for their users to Cake Wallet. This comes only a few months after Exodus partnered with Cake Wallet to help them migrate their tens of thousands of Monero users to Cake Wallet, showing how much trust and respect we've been honored to build over the years, even with competitors.

For those looking to migrate to Cake Wallet from MyMonero, please see our official support docs on the migration process here, or keep reading to learn more about the details of the sunset and stewardship transition, our shared commitment to your privacy, and more.

Below is the full text of the press release issued by MyMonero on Monday, October 6th, 2025.

Dear Monero Community,

After over a decade of serving the Monero ecosystem, MyMonero has decided to sunset its wallet service on Tuesday, January 06, 2026. We’ve worked closely with the Cake Wallet team to help provide continuity for our users, given their strong track record in the Monero community. We understand the trust you've placed in us since 2014, and we're committed to ensuring a smooth, secure, and privacy-preserving transition for all users.

Our Commitment to You

Cake Wallet, as one of the most trusted names in the Monero ecosystem, provides a seamless migration path that maintains the privacy standards you expect. Cake Wallet is the ideal successor precisely because the Cake team shares our commitment to user privacy and has earned the community's trust through years of open-source, first-class development and privacy-first design.

What This Means for Your Privacy

No View Keys Will Ever Be Shared

This is critical: Cake Wallet will never receive your view keys, wallet addresses, or transaction history from MyMonero. Cake Wallet and MyMonero’s joint commitment to user privacy meant that from the moment this process started, both parties agreed to ensure that this data would never be shared.

Complete Data Destruction

Within 30 days of the service sunset all MyMonero server data will be permanently destroyed, including:

  • All view keys currently stored for light wallet functionality
  • Transaction history and metadata
  • Account information and wallet data
  • Server logs and backups

After this wipe has happened, our data center partner will assist in decommissioning the MyMonero servers in a way that ensures the data cannot be recovered.

Your seed, your control

Option 1 - Restore in Cake Wallet

You always have full control of your funds from MyMonero which makes the migration process as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Export your 25-word Monero seed phrase from MyMonero
    1. (Optional) Make a note of your wallet restore height to speed up initial wallet synchronization
  2. Open Cake Wallet, select Restore, and choose Monero
  3. Enter your seed phrase and (optional) your saved restore height from MyMonero into Cake Wallet

Option 2 - Transfer your XMR to a new wallet in Cake Wallet

Want to have the latest and greatest seed format that Monero has to offer and skip the initial sync? Instead of restoring your existing MyMonero 25-word legacy seed in Cake Wallet, create a new Polyseed wallet in Cake Wallet and simply send your funds over from MyMonero.

  1. In Cake Wallet, create a new wallet, select Monero, and use the default Polyseed format
  2. Name the wallet, and hit create
  3. Tap on receive on the nav bar at the bottom, and copy the address displayed
  4. In MyMonero, go to Send, paste the new address, and send all
    1. (Optional) if you’d like to first test the new address, feel free to start with a small amount

Option 3 - One seed, all your crypto

If you use any other cryptocurrencies alongside Monero and want to simplify your life, Cake Wallet now supports using a standard 12-word BIP 39 seed for Monero alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and most other currencies in Cake Wallet.

  1. In Cake Wallet, create a new wallet, select Monero, and change to the BIP 39 12-word seed option
  2. Name your wallet and hit create
  3. Want to add other crypto wallets to the same seed? Simply hit restore, choose the currency, and choose to use a shared wallet group

Why Cake Wallet?

We chose Cake Wallet as the ideal successor because they:

  • Never require view keys — your transaction privacy remains intact
  • Are fully open source — code is auditable by the community
  • Have first-class Monero support — not just as an afterthought
  • Share our values — privacy, security, and user sovereignty
  • Have proven reliability — serving the Monero community since 2018

Timeline

  • Tuesday, January 06, 2026: MyMonero service completely offline
  • Friday, February 06, 2026: All MyMonero data permanently destroyed

Your Questions Answered

"Is this an exit scam?"

No. You maintain complete control of your funds at all times through your seed phrase. We're providing multiple months of notice and multiple migration options. Your funds are never at risk, as even after the apps are removed from the app stores they will remain on your devices.

"What about my transaction history?"

While your transaction history itself will be restored properly in Cake Wallet after initial synchronization, specific transaction details like recipient addresses and transaction keys aren’t able to be restored from the blockchain.

If you require these additional details for any reason, be sure to export your transaction history as CSV from MyMonero.

"Why is MyMonero shutting down?"

After a decade of service, we believe it's time for the ecosystem to move toward more decentralized solutions. Light wallets requiring view keys are increasingly at odds with Monero's privacy evolution. We'd rather sunset gracefully and hand the reins to a fantastic successor than compromise on privacy.

"What if I do nothing?"

Your seed phrase will always work with any Monero wallet. However, after Tuesday, January 06, 2026, you won't be able to access MyMonero's servers to view your balance or send transactions through our service.

Thank You

We're deeply grateful for the trust you've placed in MyMonero over the years. While this chapter is closing, we're proud to have contributed to Monero's growth and to hand off our users to a wallet that shares our commitment to privacy and security. The Monero community has always been about more than any single service or application. It's about the fundamental right to financial privacy. We're confident that Cake Wallet will serve you well in continuing this mission.

P.S. For those who've been with us since the beginning - thank you. From the early days of the MyMonero web wallet, to our mobile and desktop apps, it's been an honor to serve the Monero community. We're not saying goodbye to Monero, just evolving how we contribute to its mission.

Our biggest new feature is Pay Anything, send to any address using whatever crypto you have, as long as both currencies are supported in Cake Wallet.

Here's how it works: Got Monero but need to pay a Bitcoin address? Just paste the address and hit send. Cake Wallet automatically offers to swap your Monero to Bitcoin and complete the payment in one flow. No wallet switching, no manual swapping, no awkward "can you give me your Monero address instead?"

The magic happens behind the scenes using our existing swap providers and fees, we're just automating what used to be a multi-step process. Already have a wallet set up for the currency you need? Cake Wallet will offer to switch you there directly instead. One tap and you're sending from the right wallet instantly.

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security
Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security

Think of Cupcake as your new security sidekick. It's a separate app that turns a second device (like an old smartphone or tablet) into an air-gapped cold storage device. No internet connection required, no personal information collected, no waiting for shipping. The setup requires five steps, five minutes, and zero cost.

Why We Built This

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security

While there's certainly a place for hardware wallets, they have some shortcomings:

  • Privacy: Why give a company your home address to buy security? Ledger's 2020 breach exposed 270,000 customers' personal details, leading to targeted scams and home invasion threats.
  • Shipping delays: Need security now? Too bad. Wait 2 weeks and hope customs doesn't hold your package.
  • Secrecy: Need to hide the fact you own crypto? Hardware wallets don't offer plausible deniability. If someone sees you have a Ledger, they know you hold crypto.
  • Geographic restrictions: Live somewhere hardware wallets don't ship? You're out of luck!
  • Cost barriers: Not everyone can drop $100+ on a security device, especially when starting their crypto journey.
  • Proprietary: While some hardware wallets have dedicated themselves to being open source, many still aren't. This requires you to trust (not verify) their code.

We looked at these problems and thought there had to be another way...

How Cupcake Changes the Game

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security
Comparison between Cupcake & Hardware Wallets

Unlike hardware wallets, Cupcake requires no shipping addresses, no weeks of waiting for delivery, and no customs delays. Since Cupcake doesn't even request internet permissions, your keys stay completely offline with zero data collection, no shipping records, and no paper trails linking you to your crypto setup. It's completely free and open source, so you can verify the code yourself rather than trusting proprietary firmware. Whether you're repurposing that old Android phone in your drawer or living in a country where hardware wallets don't ship, Cupcake works anywhere you can download an app, giving you plausible deniability and strong protection for your assets.

The Technical Magic (Simplified)

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security

Here's how the security actually works:

  1. Cupcake device (offline): Holds your private keys, never connects to the internet
  2. Cake Wallet (online): Has view-only access, can see balances but can't spend
  3. Transaction process: Create transaction on Cake Wallet → Transfer to Cupcake via QR code → Sign offline → Transfer back via QR code → Broadcast

Your private keys literally never touch the internet. It's a similar security model as expensive hardware wallets, just implemented in software on a device you probably already own. We'll have a more technical blog coming shortly.

Real Talk: Is This Actually Secure?

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security

Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: Cupcake provides the same fundamental security as hardware wallets: air-gapped private key storage.

For some situations, Cupcake even has a slight edge because:

  • You control the security environment
  • Less likely target for supply chain attacks
  • No firmware backdoors
  • Ability to be used with hardened operating systems like GrapheneOS

With that said, hardware wallets certainly still have a place, and can often offer better assurances in the security it's offering you.

Want maximum security with Cupcake? Here are some advanced tips:

While simply enabling and using Cupcake gives immediate benefits. Users who want to maximize security can do so by following this advice:

  1. Keeping your Cupcake device on airplane mode permanently, only going online to update software.
  2. Keeping your device updated.
  3. Using a device that's still receiving security updates.
  4. Using a device with a more modern security chip, such as a newer iPhone or Pixel.
  5. Using a device that has no other purpose other than to run Cupcake.
  6. Using Lockdown Mode on an iOS device, and Google's Advanced Data Protection on an Android device.

Getting Started Is Simple

  1. Download Cupcake on a spare device (phone, tablet, whatever)
  2. Turn off internet on that device for best security
  3. Create your wallet and write down your seed phrase
  4. Set up view-only access in your main Cake Wallet (Optional)
  5. Start using hardware-level security immediately

That's it. Five steps, five minutes, zero cost.

Here's the best part: Cupcake works seamlessly with Cake Wallet through "view-only" wallets. Your spending keys stay safely locked away on your offline Cupcake device, while you can still check balances and monitor transactions on your everyday Cake Wallet. When you're ready to spend, just grab your Cupcake device to sign the transaction in seconds! This offer you air-gapped security with everyday convenience.

Who Should Use Cupcake?

Perfect for: Anyone wanting hardware wallet security without the cost, privacy advocates who refuse to share personal information with hardware manufacturers, and international users in regions where hardware wallets don't ship or face import restrictions. If you need security right now rather than waiting weeks for delivery, or you're a crypto newcomer who wants to test cold storage without a major investment, Cupcake gives you that flexibility.

Maybe stick with hardware wallets if: You strongly prefer dedicated hardware, you're managing institutional-level funds that require specialized compliance features, or you simply don't have a spare device to dedicate exclusively to Cupcake. Keep in mind that Cupcake currently supports Bitcoin and Monero, with more assets coming soon, so if you need broader cryptocurrency support right now, a multi-asset hardware wallet might better suit your needs.

The Bottom Line

Meet Cupcake: Your New Secret Weapon for Crypto Security

Cupcake isn't trying to replace hardware wallets entirely, it's giving users a new choice. Maybe you want to test cold storage before buying hardware. Maybe you live somewhere hardware wallets don't ship. Or maybe you want something that allows plausible deniability...'Oh, it's just an old phone of mine.'

Whatever your reason, Cupcake delivers the same fundamental security promise as hardware wallets: your private keys stay offline and under your control.

Ready to try it? Download Cupcake today and experience what crypto security should feel like—instant, private, and accessible to everyone.
